Gone are those days when an organization used to hire a couple of people to handle their marketing activities for its branding and spreading how a company works and what they sell! In recent years, the number of global mobile and internet users has gone up significantly. When you want to promote your brand online, you have to work on omnichannel marketing activities and manage remote digital marketing teams.

Thanks to the internet, the Digital Marketing and Branding Agency business is booming. But, we know that handling a remote team is not easy, especially when your primary business is not doing online marketing.

While some of the social media platforms are giving an edge to video-marketers, we know that to win search engine rankings, we still need PR, content marketing, on & off-page SEO activities and what not?. Did I mention Podcasts and video marketing are also part of the digital marketing activities? As, marketing, especially digital marketing has gone far from just telling people what we sell and what we offer. It’s all about offering the most value to the users. Email marketing, CRM integrations, lead nurturing, handling marketing cloud, online reputation management and content creation are just the basics to start with.

Managing remote marketing team

Here are some of the best practices and tips to manage your remote marketing team and get the best outputs!

Define your niche and needs

First thing first. When you start the hiring process of your remote marketing team, set your own goals and requirements first. All the marketing platforms and all the marketing activities are not suitable for all businesses. Define your audience before jumping into digital marketing and then go ahead as per your preferences.

Using the right tools

While you are working with your remote creative team, you have to make sure that all the tasks, timelines and delivery dates become transparent to everyone. Maybe you are planning to launch a new product in the market and you have all the requirements ready with you in advance. Things related to the PR blogs, platforms introductions videos, content marketing topics and more would be your go-to things for a product launch, plan them in advance. But, when people are working remotely, they should also have that visibility to see the deadlines coming to them.

Start using collaborative tools to manage and organize your team projects properly. Starting from calling, task management tools, design collaboration tools and more; start using professional tools to make sure your work doesn’t get stuck in between. There are several free or freemium tools available in the market, so for starters, try them and get your work done.

Building relationships

Although you have a remote team working on your projects and you are paying them to get your work done. It does not mean that you don’t have to build relationships with them and share your company culture with them (well the positive stuff).

When you build a good professional relationship with your remote marketing team members, you are making sure that both the ends remain balanced. As your remote team would not have daily face-to-face scrum meetings with you, building a rapport with them is necessary. While learning their behavioral patterns, also try to find ways how you would keep them engaged with your workflows that they do not lose interest in your brand.

Initiate by building an in-house team

Whenever you are planning to start working with your remote teams, make sure you start building your remote teams in-house. This helps you manage organizational culture within teams and help you with team bonding. Many times, people take projects on their hands and fail to deliver them on a given time frame as they are not used to the freedom they might get while working remotely.

When you want to introduce the culture of freedom and remote work in your organization, make sure you start with a small in-house team and then gradually go in the remote teamwork situation.

Hire culture fit people

Remember your first day at your school or university? You did not interact with everyone. You took a while to understand which kind of person would become your friend and who would share a good long time relationship with you.

Same way, you should understand which people would become a culture fit for your company and how you would be able to deal with them. Even though they are not going to work directly with your in-house staff, they fall under the same umbrella of your brand and brand ideology; so a culture fit remote teammates is a must. Also, your marketing team is the one who is going to present your company online, which brings us back to basics. If they can’t understand you and your company, they won’t be able to promote you!

Establish a process

When you build your team in-house, you get the time to set the process. By setting a process, you should actually try new things while your resources are working in your presence. Try to include daily or weekly standups to gain a better understanding of your ongoing pipelines.

From handing over the tasks to getting analysis of your project ROI, the process has to be established in the very beginning; which the other remote team members would follow accordingly. If you have the process set for the entire marketing section, it would become easy for your entire organization to work in sync.

Follow the same ideology for your brand at both the ends

When you are dealing with a remote marketing team, following your brand story and following the same ideology behind your product and its idea is a tough job. As the person sitting on the other side of the screen may have some different approach to see and market your products. While implementing or planning a marketing strategy for your organization, make sure that you are passing the same message that your organization actually wants to promote and show to your audience.

When the balance of ideology between both the end is not maintained, the balance between what your team delivers, what your sales team tries to sell and what your marketing present to your prospects would also show a gap between them. Which would ultimately ruin your brand!

Never forget to appreciate your team

People working remotely on your projects are ultimately humans only. And we, as humans, carry a tendency to work well with getting appreciation from our boss or colleagues.

While you launch a successful marketing or paid ads campaign, make sure you shoot an organization-wide appreciation email to give them the credit for what they have helped your organization to achieve.

Feedback – give & take

For a marketing coordinator or a project manager, it should be the first duty to communicate with the team for every campaign going live, reports coming in the system or the ROI report gets live in the system.

Implementation of continuous feedback and data analysis system always ensures that all your team members and your requirement from them are on the right track. While they don’t only help you to manage your on-going campaigns and marketing efforts, they help you plan your next steps as well.

Be ready for emergency situations

Recently, we have seen some campaigns going viral in a matter of no time. What if your team has just called for the day end and you come across such a campaign and think that this campaign would help you promote your brand?

To encounter such a situation, your relations and rapport would come to your rescue. No one, including me, would love to stay back at the office after a busy designing or copywriting day. But in such cases, learn to handle situations with care.

Encourage their participation in learning new things

In marketing, new technologies are always coming and disrupting existing digital marketing trends and platforms. As a project manager, you should make sure that your remote digital marketing and creative teams stay updated with all the latest tech stack coming in the marketing tech.

Surprise them with the local tech meetup tickets or sponsor their online learning training to grow together.

Never say never

Always remember that marketing people are creative and they can work with their full potential if they have been given a chance to work under full creative freedom. When your marketing team comes up with some new ideas, always try to give it a try. Never stop them by putting their brilliant creative idea out!

If you think that idea would hinder your brand identity, discuss. If you are not sure about how the ROI would come, let them try and learn a lesson about positive or negative things.

So, these were some simple steps and practices to manage your remote digital marketing teams.
